Food

  • Nasi Lemak with Fried Chicken
  • Char K T with Egg Noodles
  • Three Layered Tea

The Good

Nothing much. Ingredients were mostly fresh. That’s about it.

The Mediocre

Pretty much everything dished out was “just passable”. Nothing spectacular yet marred with some inherent flaws.

The condiments that came with the Nasi Lemak was fresh. The chicken was fresh out of the frier even though the chicken itself has probably been sitting in a freezer for a while. The sambal sauce was bad though. It was like a mix of savoury and sweet sauce with a jam-like texture. Super weird and not pleasant in general.

The noodles were fried nicely, however it was odd given how chewy and hard they were. This definitely threw the whole dish off. However, the pork was fresh and tasted it. The flavour balance was on point in general and portion size was large.

The Bad

The tea consisted mostly of ice and condensed milk. As a result, the flavour of tea was noticeably absent. Rather pointless drink really and the waiter was so inflexible that I couldn’t order the Nasi Lemak without picking a drink (which is actually charged as a separate item according to the tax invoice).

The Verdict

Overall an uninspiring and highly ordinary restaurant serving up unauthentic, pretend Malaysian food.

Would Penguin Eat Again?

This meal was overall passable but honestly, there are many better choices for Malaysian just in the Melbourne CBD. I don’t think I will be back.
