The Good
Everything was made fresh to order. The beef was cooked just right, with good flavour and was tender and juicy. The American cheese though was probably the highlight, which was extremely aromatic, flavourful and just filled with cheesy goodness. Combined with the grilled mushrooms and the super soft roll, this was a winner combo.
I also enjoyed the abundant choice of hot and barbeque sauces and you can go crazy mixing up the flavours to create the perfectly spiced Cheesesteak.
Onion rings were fried perfetly. Thick cut, chunky onion rings coated with a crispy and flavourful batter. Delicious!
The Mediocre
Fries were rather ordinary. Heavily salted and fried slightly too dark, it made for a crunchy experience but soon became far too salty.
The sweet peppers were also too flavourful in their own right to be combined with the Cheesesteak. Unfortunately the sweetness overpowered the flavours of everything else in the roll and all you could taste was the pepper.
The Bad
The attitude of the kitchen and counter staff left much to be desired on this occasion. This was in stark contrast to my past experience where the staff were very laid back and friendly.
The Verdict
Overall one of the best Cheesesteak one can get in Melbourne. I strongly suggest the mushroom or the plain Cheesesteak as both the pepper varieties weren’t nearly as delicious.
Would Penguin Eat Again?
Sure. Although this is a great Cheesesteak, I am still a strong believer that a good burger beats a great cheesesteak though.
