The Good

Given the numerous tempting choices on the menu, I was too greedy and overwhelmed to pick just one poutine. Having spoken to Zev the cook from Toronto, I was recommended the Canadian Poutine. But of course! And damn was it a good recommendation.

The chips itself were absolutely delicious. Having been double fried, they had a crunchy outer embodying an exceedingly mushy and soft inner. A perfect specimen of how fried potatoes should be.

The maple bacon were an obvious highlight. Bold flavours of maple syrup came with each bite of the crunchy bacon chunks. No, the maple flavour is not just a novelty. It is literally plain old crispy bacon with an added kick.

The abundance of gravy and cheese definitely brought everything together and made for a cheesy gooey mess of delicious in a mouthful.

The Mediocre

While most ingredients were applied liberally, there wasn’t much cheese curd to be found. I was really looking forward to trying cheese curd in Melbourne but what little bits I could isolate was unfortunately masked by the cheese and gravy mixture. So sadly, I can’t comment on how authentic the cheese curd actually is.

The Bad

Nothing.

The Verdict

This poutine is undoubtedly a tastier rendition of the increasingly popular ‘dirty fries’ that was made special by the crispy maple bacon and fries that were absolutely spot on.

Would Penguin Eat Again?

Absolutely. Will definitely be back to try the more outrageous flavours. Do hope I get to try more cheese curd next time though…
