The Good
The Beef Rice Noodles was absolutely spot on. Just like in Asia, there was plenty of “wok hei” and made for a highly aromatic experience. The noodles were just the right softness as were the generous amount of beef. The dish was seasoned perfectly with plenty of soy sauce, spring onions and bean sprouts. I can’t emphasize enough how well done this simple dish was and, along with some chilli, made for one of the best beef Hor Fun I’ve had in Melbourne.
The Grilled Pork was also done relatively well. The lemongrass flavour was bold, and accompanied two large pieces of soft grilled pork chop. There were some dry spots, but this was saved by the fish sauce. The fried egg was also cooked just right and the yoke oozed out perfectly onto the rice once cut.
The Mediocre
Nothing.
The Bad
Nothing.
The Verdict
Stumbling upon this joint, I really wasn’t expecting much. Overall a pleasant surprise and dishes are done rather well.
Would Penguin Eat Again?
Even with the amount of competition just of Elizabeth Street, sure. Given the price, they really do pull their weight!
