  • 'Finding Emo' Burgers:
    • Parma Crumb Flathead
    • Sirracha Mayonnaise Barramundi
    • Lemon and Dill Mayonnaise Salmon

The Good

The batter on the fillet in the appetiser was incredible. Perhaps the most perfectly shapely, crispy and light batter, this was made better by a demonstration of how the batter is made. We could have eaten the shop out of fish if they coated it in that batter.

While the range of the Finding Emo series was great, the variety of flavours available was definitely welcome. The Parmesan-crumbed flathead was the standout of the three variations. Beautifully crispy crumb with moist and really fresh fish that didn't become soggy in the burger, all complimented fantastically by the salad.

The flagship 'Finding Emo' burger was a really richly flavoured experience with squid ink barramundi, Sriracha mayonnaise and roe. Like the flathead, the fish was incredibly fresh and flavourful.

The lemon and dill mayonnaise salmon burger was perhaps the most traditional fish burger of the three, but these flavours are popular for a reason: they work really really well with fish, especially paired with lovely grilled salmon fillet.

The Mediocre

While the ever vogue squid ink enhances the aesthetic of the food as a talking point, it unfortunately added nothing to the palette tonight. We also though that the sriracha mayonnaise in the barramundi burger was perhaps a bit overpowering, with every bite being dominated by the sauce rather than the fish.

Despite being sort of a snack, the chips didn't seem to match the perfect crunch that the fish offered. They were well seasoned (possibly with a bit of dried basil?), but felt rather more soggy than crisp, and while a fairly small point (and small in portion size), Tank is a fish and chippery, which implies that the other half of the formula should be exceptional as well.

The Bad

Nothing.

The Verdict

As presented by Bill the owner, there is a missing niche in the burger market, which is almost exclusively filled with beef and chicken options.

For a very reasonable price, these burgers definitely fill that gap with an excellent, if slightly contrived, selection of burgers. The burgers showcase the most popular fish sold at Tank and each bring a little bit different to the table.

Would Penguin Eat Again?

Get that fish and chip batter in me, and we definitely will be back for the flathead.

We thank Tank so much for inviting us along to their launch of the Finding Emo series.
