The Good
The Chicken Wings were surprisingly delicious. Initially expecting something akin to KFC wicked wings, these were a step above. The light batter was flavourful and seasoned with a nice level of spice and bold flavours. With just the right amount of crunch, the enclosed meaty protein was exceedingly juicy and tender with a great chicken aroma. The only qualms are that the wings became increasingly salty as the meal progressed.
The Mac and Cheese was a real winner. Beautifully baked to the right softness, the macaroni had just the right texture and coated in a rich, creamy cheese sauce. This accompanied the fried chicken rather well and provided great contrast in texture. Only thing missing is a charred upper layer which could've been the cherry on top.
The Winter Slaw was also rather enjoyable. Thinly julienned, fresh and crunchy vegetables mixed within Belle's special sauce. A hint of zing, akin to wasabi can be tasted within the salad and provides a unique twist to an otherwise delicious side.
The Mediocre
The Southern Fried Drumsticks were honestly underwhelming. The batter wasn't nearly crunchy enough. Nor did it have much flavour apart from being overwhelmingly salty. The meat was highly inconsistent, with some bits overly dry and chewy. I think KFC wins this one.
The Chips were also nothing out of the ordinary. Run of the mill McCain frozen crinkle cut chips, though freshly and rather perfectly fried, were smothered in a heap of paprika and chicken salt. While enjoyable, these chips were unremarkable.
The Bad
The Fried Mushroom was downright terribad. Tasteless batter enclosed a soggy, chewey and unseasoned mushroom. Served on a piece of plain white bread, this was literally the most underwhelming thing I've eaten all week. What a bland, soggy mess!
The Verdict
Overall a half decent fried chicken joint, although nothing was entirely that spectacular but was enjoyable overall.
Would Penguin Eat Again?
I would be back for some more of that Mac and Cheese, and maybe even hotter wings!
Although I'd definitely give their "Southern Fried" variant a miss, as that was far, far too mediocre.
