The Good
The favourite was undoubtedly the Porthos Portuguese Sardine in Chilli Tomato Sauce. Ripping open the can reveals a generous amount of tightly packed, wholesome chunks of sardines. The sauce, being so flavourful with a hint of spice, was extremely appetising, which went exceptionally well with a piece of toasted sourdough with a drizzle of olive oil.
We also thoroughly enjoyed Luca's Ocean Trout Pâté with Port Wine. With a flawless and smooth consistency, the spreadable mix is best eaten on a slice of seeded, wholemeal toast which provides a contrast in texture. Without being overly oily nor rich, the spread had a beautifully subtle flavour, with each bite providing a pleasant fish aroma and aftertaste.
The Maria Organic Tuna in Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil also deserves a special mention. Simple and straightforward, this can was blatantly uncomplicated yet exceptionally scrumptious. Spreading the big chunks of unseasoned whole tuna, soaked in a full bath of olive oil, on a plain slice of toast allowed you to truly appreciate the full, unhindered flavour and freshness of the tuna. The Extra Virgin Olive Oil provided an additional depth in flavour, and this was an exceptionally simple yet palatable tuna. Definitely the best I've had in Australia.

The Verdict
Having sampled just a handful of their huge range of offerings at The Canned Company, it's clear that their canned goods are of top quality and represents no ordinary canned fish. Definitely not something you can easily get in supermarkets here.
Especially imported from Portugal, where canned foods are a local specialty, it's no surprise that the fish within taste this good and made me reminisce my days spent holidaying in Lisbon. Suffice to say, we thoroughly enjoyed the samples and would love to get my flippers on more.
Would Penguin Eat Again?
Absolutely. Being a fish lover, penguin enjoyed every last bite and would definitely be back for more, though you can only find them at selected retailers at this stage...
