The Good
We opted for the "Minor" Big Beef, with some major modifications. Adding to the tower of goodness, we loaded on the Mac and Cheese Waffle, Pulled Pork, Potato Tots, Dorito Crumbed Fried Chicken, bacon and of course a fried egg.
Our burger was most definitely too big to handle, and contained too much delicious goodness to describe. The highlights though included the Fried Chicken, Beef and Bacon.
We thoroughly enjoyed the Dorito Crumbed Fried Chicken. Just as its name suggests, the golden brown, crunchy batter was composed of actual Dorito crumbs. Fried to a golden perfection, the Doritos provided an exceptionally unique flavour to the fried chicken, with an ever present corn chip flavour permeating throughout. The chicken itself was juicy and well seasoned, and was sliced up to chunks, as opposed to being a whole fillet, for easier frying.
The bacon was fried to a nice crisp. With just the right amount charring, the crunch of the fatty bits perfectly juxtaposed the soft and flavourful protein. This was well complemented by the beef patty, which carried a great beef flavour. Despite being fully cooked, the protein was tender and juicy, providing a full and bold beef aroma.
The Pulled Pork was rather delicious. Exceptionally soft and tender, the protein was cooked to perfection. Well marinated in a sweet barbecue sauce, the pork flavour was forward and wasn't masked by the sweetness of the sauces.
All of this was sandwiched between two lightly toasted brioche buns. Baked in house, these buns were exceptionally buttery and soft, yet held together so well despite the sheer size of the burgers. Especially designed with huge burgers in mind, the buns are baked fresh everyday with real butter and milk, and you can definitely taste the difference.
We also enjoyed the Thickshakes. Just like the burgers, we were encouraged to mix and match the flavours as we pleased. What we ended up with was a Nutella, Peanut Butter and Oreo shake. Exceptionally thick, trying slurp up the shake was almost like trying to eat ice cream through a straw. The flavours worked rather well together and was definitely one of the best, and THE thickest shake I've had.
The Mediocre
While the notion of a Mac and Cheese Waffle was extremely enticing, we found that it was lacking in flavour. We could've probably done with a lot more cheese and less waffle batter, which would provide much more flavour.
The Bad
Nothing.
The Verdict
With owner DJ coming from such an experienced culinary background, it's no surprise that Heroes Burger Diner dishes up pretty extraordinary burgers. The ingredients used were universally a cut above, as was the execution.
Given that virtually all components prepared and hand crafted in house, you certainly won't be left disappointed stacking up and customising your burger to your hearts content, and we certainly weren't.
Would Penguin Eat Again?
Most definitely. Despite the strong burger game in Melbourne, Heroes certainly ranks amongst the best we've ever come across. From the super customisable menu, to the generous and tasty ingredients, people will definitely be talking about this Hero for a long time to come.
Penguineats would like to thank Heroes Burger Diner for inviting us.
