The Good
We began with the Chicken Spare Ribs with BBQ sauce. With a nice crispy outer, the ribs were generously coated in a sweet and smokey barbecue sauce. Without being overpowering, the sauce was well marinated yet allowed for the tender chicken flavour to shine.
The Medium Peri Peri Chicken was exceptional. With a slight charring on the outer, the chicken was grilled to perfection. With a slight spicy kick, the aromatic capsicum shone through and perfectly complemented the chicken without being overpowering. The highlight though was undoubtedly the chicken protein itself, which was exceptionally tender and full of flavour despite being breast meat.
We also enjoyed the Habanero BBQ Chicken. Equally tender and juicy, the spiciness of the sauce stole the show. With a strong kick that doesn’t hit immediately, the sweetness of the barbecue sauce was definitely a welcome compliment that toned down the heat.
The Memento Chips didn’t disappoint either. Loaded with a generous amount of spices, these chips packed a punch in terms of heat. The crunchy, golden brown potatoes were drizzled? with melted cheese and showered with fresh cubes of raw onion and tomatoes. Simply a perfect combination of crispy potatoes, cheesy goodness, and a refreshing crunch from the fresh veggies.
We also opted to sample a trio of burgers, though the standout was undoubtedly The Double. Sandwiched between the buns was an exceedingly tender and flavoursome fillet of grilled chicken. Cooked to perfection, this chicken was well complemented by a generous amount of melted cheddar and sweet sautéed onions, which provided great flavour. Along with the crunch of the lettuce and the fresh juicy tomatoes the burger was simple yet incredibly delicious.
The Mediocre
We felt that the Crispy Burger needs much fine tuning. The batter of the chicken was hard and exceptionally crunchy, which is extremely appropriate for a fried fish, but felt rather odd when executed on a chicken fillet. We also found that the squid ink bun, while innovative, felt drier than expected.
The Bad
Nothing.
The Verdict
Despite its Mexican twist and diverse menu, Capricho undeniably excels at their simple yet incredible flame grilled chicken. Utilising only the best La Ionica free range chicken in all their menu items, it’s no surprise that anything with this chicken in it resulted in an exceptionally tasty experience.
With the majority of ingredients hand crafted in-house, yes including that Piri Piri sauce, it’s no doubt that Capricho provides an exciting yet unique sensory experience.
Would Penguin Eat Again?
Most definitely. There’s no doubt that Capricho dished out some of the best grilled chicken I’ve ever sampled, and I will definitely be back for more, again and again.
