The Good
The Green Goodness was beautifully presented. Lining the sides of the dish were undoubtedly the highlight. Those ricotta stuffed mushrooms were absolutely divine, so creamy and full of flavour, with bursts of juiciness from the fresh mushrooms. This was well complemented by a bed of silky smooth scrambled eggs and the crispness of the sauteed kale. Alongside an abundance of spinach and asparagus that was well seasoned and topped with a matcha salsa verde, this dish not only appeared fresh and healthy but tasted the part too!
We also enjoyed the Coconut, Raspberry and Citrus Hotcakes. Served with a generous amount of raspberry compote, the three-high stack of pancakes looked mighty spectacular. Demolishing the tower reveals pancakes that were cooked to perfection,. Incredibly moist and spongey, the hotcakes were unexpectedly slightly denser than expected, though none of it was hard nor chewy by any means. The very soft and hearty pancakes were well contrasted by the crunch of the granola and almonds scattered around. Served with even more fresh berries, the dish definitely delivered on tartness, though we felt that it needed more sweetness to provide more well-rounded flavours.
The Mediocre
Both the Matcha Latte and Rainbow Lattes were rather pedestrian. Apart from the admittedly pretty latte art with added food dye, the drinks themselves failed to excite. Both the coffee and matcha flavours were present, though universally muted and not nearly as bold as we’d prefer.
The Bad
Nothing.
The Verdict
Junkyard has been on my radar for a long time coming, and this visit certainly didn’t disappoint. With creative and unique twists thrown in to an otherwise traditional breakfast menu, we found our meal overall interesting, enjoyable and most of all, satisfying.
Would Penguin Eat Again?
Sure. With such an interesting menu, there’s plenty more that we’d like to try and will definitely be back for more!
