The Good
We began our meal by digging into the signature dish, namely the Chicken Waffles, and we certainly weren’t disappointed. Two sizable pieces of perfectly fried, golden brown fried chicken accompanied a generously sized waffle. The thin batter of the chicken was well-seasoned and crispy, giving way to a tender and juicy inner. The savoury sensations of the protein were directly juxtaposed by the sweetness of the vanilla ice cream that slowly melted onto the waffle itself. The buttermilk waffle was pillowy soft and aptly spongy, perfectly soaking up the juicy chicken and of course, the sweet Canadian maple syrup drizzled throughout.
We also enjoyed The Original Fried Chicken Burger. Sandwiched within the fresh and fluffy house-made buns, the crispy piece of fried chicken was well accompanied by a refreshing coleslaw. The batter of the chicken offered up a satisfying crunch with each bite, which enclosed a tender inner. While the use of thigh meat could’ve produced a juicier result, the breast cut undeniably yielded a more textured experience. The FAT sauce and coleslaw added a nice creaminess and moisture that served as the perfect complement to the chicken.
The Buffalo Wings didn’t disappoint either. Well-seasoned and heavily spiced, these wings were unapologetically bold in flavour without being overly spicy. The slightly crispy outer and the sticky glaze made for some ficker-licking goodness. The chicken within was fresh and well-marinated, inhibiting much of its flavours from the ‘buffalo’ sauces.
We rounded off our meal with the Apple Crumble shake, and boy was this shake amazing. It was like slurping up your favourite apple pie with a dash of milk on the side. Exceptionally thick and creamy, the apple flavours were bold and forward, well complemented by a hint of buttery goodness. Within, we found occasional bits of still-crunchy crumble, adding an interesting texture to the already delicious drink.
The Mediocre
We really did enjoy the Poutine, which on this occasion was generously topped with gravy and grated cheese. The chips within were perfectly fried, well seasoned, aptly crispy with an airy inner, quite literally faultless. However, our one and only biggest gripe about this item was that it didn’t use cheese curds, which any authentic poutine should contain. Shame really, because it all tasted, really, really good despite of this!
The Bad
Nothing.
The Verdict
We’ve been wanting to visit FAT for a long time coming, and this visit certainly didn’t disappoint. The chicken we sampled tonight were consistently well-executed and delicious, and it’s clear that FAT is a cut above your ordinary chicken joint.
Would Penguin Eat Again?
Sure. Hand over more of that Apple Crumble shake please, and along with some Chicken Waffles!
