The Good
It was off to a great start with the Breakfast Burger. Sandwiched between the lightly toasted squid ink buns, the star of the show was of course that fried goats cheese patty. The thin, flakey crumb offered up a nice crispness, which enclosed an inner filled with a mixture of soft gooey goats cheese and Beetroot puree. This was well accompanied by pieces of amazingly crispy bacon and a runny fried egg, which was smothered in an ever flavoursome beetroot hollandaise, providing a rich creaminess throughout. Our only gripe about this burger would be the goats cheese itself, which could’ve been bolder and more forward.
The Nourish Bowl surely didn’t disappoint either. Topped with a generous amount of fresh, wholesome veggies, this vegetarian option was healthy yet satisfying, and surely didn’t fall short on flavours. The highlights included the soft, almost gooey roast pumpkin, as well as the refreshing burst of sweetness from the cherry tomatoes. Underneath hid a bed of warm, pillowy brown rice, which was well accompanied by a flavoursome almond butter dressing that provided a hint of richness.
The Mediocre
The Banoffee French Toast didn’t quite make its mark on this occasion. The banana was nicely charred and beautifully caramelised, which was well complemented by an aptly sweet mascarpone and cookie crumbs. Unfortunately, the french toast itself was much too dense, lacking in airiness and definitely needed a more spongy feedback.
The Bad
Nothing.
The Verdict
TREI is a cute little neighbourhood cafe that offers up a menu that’s definitely on-trend and visually appealing. The diverse offering is bound to satisfy both the health-conscious as well as those looking for a more gluttonous feed.
While the execution wasn’t quite perfect, we certainly enjoyed our brunch here, and the real winner would undoubtedly be that signature nourish bowl.
