The Good
It was a pleasant start with the Saigon Scrambled Eggs. Topped with an abundance of Asian herbs, the fluffy scrambled eggs were well-seasoned and mixed with an abundance of fresh chillies that gave it an appetising spice. The crunchy fried shallots scattered throughout offered up a satisfying crunch, which was perfectly juxtaposed by the soft, gamey pate spread liberally on two slices of sourdough.
The Pork Benny Burger was rather enjoyable. In between the soft, fluffy toasted brioche, we found two perfectly poached eggs almost bursting at the seams. Alongside sat a generous helping of soft, flavoursome pulled pork collar that exhibited a beautiful pork flavour and a juicy, succulent texture. The addition of the bacon crumbs provided an additional depth in savoury flavour, which was held together by a rich and creamy hollandaise. Sprinkled around the burger were the crunchy beerios, providing an amazing crunch and a slight sweetness throughout.
We concluded our meal with the Breakfast Panna Cotta. The presentation was stunning, and made way for a soft and creamy coconut pudding that was embeded full of chia seeds. Siting on a line on either side of the panna cotta were fresh berries and dehydrayted coconut yoghurt, both providing a fresh and fruity sensation to the dish. The buckwheat crumble created a textured and crunchy experience, which beautifully contrasted the smoothness of the panna cotta.
The Mediocre
Nothing.
The Bad
Our Vietnamese Ice Coffee was severely lacking in any “Vietnamese” qualities. Without any sweetened condensed milk within, the drink honestly tasted no different than any ordinary ice coffee. The signature deep, dark roast combined with an intense sweet sensation was most definitely absent, and having been to Vietnam, this is far from the real deal.
The Verdict
Holla is a relatively new yet welcoming addition to the bustling eateries on Victoria Street in Richmond.
With a trendy fitout and plenty of natural light, this cafe manages to dish up plenty of photogenic dishes that not only looked stunning, but tasted the part too. The winner for us though? That Pork Benny burg!
Would Penguin Eat Again?
Sure. We thoroughly enjoyed the well-balanced dishes on offer, and look forward to return!
