The Good
With brilliant colours, the Signature Tomato Toast was a beautiful sight. The vibrant tomatoes were well matched with an abundance of fresh rocket and fresh, fragrant basil. We opted to add some mushrooms to this stunning toast, which worked rather well with the sweetness of the balsamic vinegar drizzled throughout. This was all served on a thick cut, beautifully buttery, and lightly toasted piece of bread that perfectly soaked up all the juicy goodness of the tomatoes and mushrooms. Delicious.
The Signature Mushrooms Toast certainly didn’t disappoint either. Loaded with a variety of exceptionally juicy mushrooms that quite literally squirted as you bit into each chunky, meaty goodness, the beautiful mushroom aroma was further enhanced by the delectable truffle creme friache, adding amazing flavour and a hint of richness throughout. The balsamic onions worked a treat in offering sweetness and balance, while the fresh leaves of spinach were well matched by thin slices of delicate, tender prosciutto.
No visit to any Melbourne cafe can be complete without downing a cup of coffee, and the Latte at Kings and Knaves certainly didn’t disappoint. While the latte art definitely left much to be desired, we found the coffee itself to be pleasant, aptly bold and forward, with good flavour and beautifully frothed milk that made for a smooth experience. Well balanced in bitterness, our only criticism would be that the aftertaste was a bit lacking on this occasion.
The Mediocre
Unfortunately their Waffle wasn’t overly impressive. The waffle itself was not made in house and felt quite similar to a relatively common store bought variety. While the berry compote combined with maple syrup was quite enjoyable when eaten with the warm waffles, it’s quickly apparent that the highlight here is their toasts, and most definitely not waffles.
The Bad
Nothing.
The Verdict
As a newly established cafe targeting the working crowd in the Melbourne CBD, Kings and Knaves certainly impressed with their signature toasts and the prospect of a bottomless mug of coffee.
Their a simple though well-executed menu of toasts and pastries, with decent coffee to pair, will surely satisfy those looking for a quick, tasty yet healthy breakfast or lunch in the city.
