The Good
The highlight of our meal was undoubtedly the Potato Cake. Fried to a perfect golden brown, the batter was incredibly crunchy and offered up a satisfying crispness with each chomp down. Lightly seasoned, we found the inner soft and
We enjoyed our modified Mr Fun-Gi. There’s no doubt the star of the show was the wagyu beef patty. The beef itself was cooked just right, tender and juicy with just an incredible, quality beefy flavour thanks to the coarse ground. Accompanying it were plenty of juicy sautéed mushrooms, which could’ve done with a tad more seasoning. The bacon and egg addition proceed unremarkable and added little to the flavours or texture, as the sweetness of the tomato sauce overwhelmed our tastebuds. The biggest disappointment though was definitely the onion rings, which were thin, dry and to be quite honest, over-fried.
The Mediocre
Our Fish Burger felt rather pedestrian. Within the toasted, fluffy buns, we found the fish fillet crumbed with a herby mixture. The fish itself was once again of high quality, though it’s taste was masked by the herbs and more importantly, the liberally applied tartare sauce. Combined with a few leaves of lettuce and some pickled onions, this immediately reminded us of a Fillet-O-Fish, and honestly shared essentially the same flavour profile.
The Bad
Nothing.
The Verdict
Much like Shannon Bennett’s multitude of other ventures, Benny Burger neither impressed nor disappointed.
Their ethical focus is definitely a unique and refreshing take on fast food, though when it’s all said and done, the burgers here sit firmly just above the mediocre basket.
With such an amazing burger scene in Melbourne, it’s hard to understand how Benny Burger can truly outshine the others.
Would Penguin Eat Again?
We’d definitely be back for more potato cakes!
