The Good

The Shakshuka Platter was simply delightful. Opting to sample the “White” shashuka, we found the stunning baked eggs beautifully presented and exceptionally fragrant. The generous helping of mushroom within the rich and creamy base was well accompanied plenty of fennel, oregano and thyme. Needless to say, the herby mixture offered up plenty of flavour which was well accompanied by a side of warm fluffy pita. With chilli scattered throughout providing a good amount of heat and the creaminess of goats cheese, the tangy and light Israeli salad served alongside was definitely a welcome accompaniment.

The Yarakhot certainly impressed in more ways than one. Within. The toasted pita pocket, the juicy and meaty chunks of grilled mushrooms were well spiced and provided loads of flavour. This was accompanied by cuts of roasted pumpkin offering sweetness and the crisp tang of pickled cabbage. Topping it all off was a creamy and earthy sensation thanks to the delightful hummus that held it all together.

Another highlight of the evening was Falafel Salad. Served with two varieties of falafel, both red and green were uniquely different, with the red variety offering sweeter tones and the green slightly earthier. Within the crisp yet delicate outer, each falafel was soft and textured, well spiced and just delicious on its own. When served on a bed of hummus coupled with fresh, crisp Israeli salad, this dish was simply unstoppable.

The Mediocre

The Cauliflower Papiot was also enjoyable, though failed to hit its mark like the other dishes. The cauliflower itself was a tad too soft, and there was too much liquid within the dish which watered down the hummus and made the cauliflower a tad soggy.

The Bad

Nothing.

The Verdict

It’s no surprise that Tahina is a success story. Thanks to their affordable pricing and delicious take on accessible, delicious and well-executed Isreali street food, their second and newly launched venue in Fitzroy is a hit with the locals.
