The Good
The Hanoi Spring Rolls were an absolutely delicious beginning to our lunch. Fresh out of the fryer, the outer rice paper roll was fried to a crispy, golden brown and offered up a satisfying crunch. This made way for a meaty, juicy inner that quite literally squirted out with juicy goodness. The mince was well seasoned and offered plenty of flavour. When wrapped with fresh leaves of lettuce, mint and finishing with some fish sauce, this has got to be one of the best Spring rolls we’ve had for a long while!
We also enjoyed the Mo Pho. Served piping hot and filled right to the brim, the bowl of noodles were liberally filled with plenty of soft, silky rice noodles and loaded with generous cuts of chicken. All pho shines with a good broth, and the broth here was full of flavour, well seasoned without being rich or oily. This was accompanied by fresh, crisp bok choy, bean sprouts and plenty of tofu. Not a bad pho at all!
The Mediocre
The least impressive part of our lunch was unfortunately the Banh Mi. Despite the size of the bras roll. The grilled chicken within felt rather scarce. The chicken was also drenched in a rather strange, sweet, barbecue or hoisin-esque sauce that didn’t work quite well the fresh herbs and carrots. While the bread roll was fresh, it could’ve benefitted from being 30secs in the oven to heat up, potentially giving it extra crisp and warmth.
The Bad
Nothing.
The Verdict
Offering a simple, modern take on traditional Vietnamese, Mopho Canteen’s newest venue in South Yarra provides locals with a reasonably priced and generously sized quick Vietnamese dining option.
While authenticity may not be its strong suit, we definitely weren’t disappointed by any meals and might just be the best Vietnamese we’ve come across in South Yarra.
