The Good
It was off to a tasty start with the La Resistance. Topped with two kinds of delicious melted cheese, we found the star of the show, the Wagyu beef patty, simply delicious. Perfectly cooked and offering a tender and juicy experience, the beefy flavour was bold and forward. This was well accompanied by the fresh cut onion, crisp leaves of lettuce and juicy slices of tomatoes. Combined with a cream Resistance sauce and sandwiched within a buttery, lightly toasted brioche that’s both rich and fluffy, this rendition of the humble cheeseburger certainly impressed.
We also enjoyed the Chilli Cheese Burger. This burger certainly brought the spice to a whole new level thanks to plenty of chipotle aioli and an exceptionally spicy house made chilli sauce. However the melted yellow cheddar sitting on the top notch beef patty did wonders in dialling the heat back. Meanwhile, the diced brown onions and fried shallots offered up an amazing textural diversity. All held together by the once again flawless, buttery brioche, this is definitely a burger for spice lovers!
We also tried out the Bacon’d Cheesy Fries. The beer battered fries were just perfect, so crunchy on the outside and fluffy within. On top sat plenty of charred, rendered down bacon bits that offered a savoury sensation coupled by an almost crisp texture. The liberal application of cheese sauce was well balanced by drizzles of spicy Sriracha, Thai sweet chilli and tangy Golf sauce, all adding a delicious depth in flavour and just the right balance of sweet, savoury and chilli. Trust me, these were no ordinary loaded fries and they went down a treat!
The Mediocre
Nothing.
The Bad
Nothing.
The Verdict
Despite being so affordable, the burgers at La Resistance seemingly offer no compromise.
Without towering outrageously tall with 50 patties and dripping with cheese, we found that every bite of these humble burgers were just so satisfying, well balanced, tasty and absolutely delicious.
Would Penguin Eat Again?
We must’ve walked past this unassuming little burger joint a hundred times in the past, but damn we should’ve definitely stopped by sooner! What a hidden gem and we just can’t wait to return.
Penguineats would like to thank owner Jay for inviting us to The Resistance Bar and Cafe.
