The Good
It was off to a sizzling start with the Tandoori Platter. Loaded to the brim with a variety of meats, the piping hot hotplate ensured a fragrant experience. Our favourite from the plate was undoubtedly the Tandoori Chicken. Well marinated with plenty of spices, we found the protein incredibly tender and juicy. The lamb sausages were also well-seasoned and offered up an almost bouncy texture. Incredible.
We also enjoyed the Chicken Madras. Within the thick and flavoursome sauce, the chicken was once again beautifully tender and succulent, without so much of a hint of toughness. The protein borrowed much of its flavour from the spices around it. Opting for the mild variety, our curry that’s usually heavily laden with chilli was thankfully flavoursome without being overly spicy thanks the yoghurt that’s used to take away some of the heat and adding a beautiful creaminess that made it incredibly tasty with some naan.
The Beef Korma was no less enjoyable. The beef was once again soft and flawlessly executed. The sauce around it though was just so appetising, with a nutty yet gamey sensation that was both thick and rich. It’s full-on flavour and creamy sensation well suited with the accompaniment of fluffy, long grain basmati.
The Garlic Naan definitely deserves a special mention. The sizeable pieces of naan were fresh out off the oven. It’s puffy, almost airy crust was perfect for soaking up the delightful curry sauces, while the middle of each naan was generously loaded with a fragrant and incredibly tasty garlic paste that simply made your mouth water. Delicious in its own and even better with curry!
We rounded off the evening with a traditional Indian treat, the Gulab Jamun. And boy was this the best Gulab we have ever come across. Served warm, the donut was drowned in a sweet, gingery syrup and dusted with icing sugar. The donut itself was fluffy and spongy, and the textured inner just added an extra dimension to this already tasty treat. A great way to round off the evening.
The Mediocre
Nothing.
The Bad
Nothing.
The Verdict
It’s no surprise Indian Star has won so many awards over the years. Their refined approach and traditional, home-made items offers patrons an excellent introduction into Indian cuisine that’s bound to satisfy.
And for those with a slightly lower tolerance of spice and chilli, they can of course tone the heat right down while still holding true to their traditional heritage.
Would Penguin Eat Again?
Definitely. We would love to stop by again for more flavoursome carries and flawless naans.
Penguineats would like to thank owner Shanu for inviting us to Indian Star.
