The Good
We were off to an impressive start thanks to the Satay Skewers. The slightly crisp outer enclosed some juicy, tender chicken that was full of flavour and well marinated in spices. Dipping into the divine satay was an absolute delight, the bold, nutty satay was thick and rich, with just a hint of spicy goodness, making for a very appetising starter indeed.
We also enjoyed the Mantou. The Mantou, buns, were fried to a perfect golden brown. Tearing away the crisp outer reveals an inner that was incredibly soft and almost spongy. This served as the perfect vehicle for soaking up the delectably spicy curry dipping sauce. Oh those buns were simply irresistible!
The mains were no less impressive. The Beef Rendang Nasi Lemak was simply flawless. The beef Rendang itself was so tender and succulent, borrowing much flavour from the fragrant and herby rendang sauce that was thick and absolutely intense in flavour thanks to the lemongrass and turmeric. This was well accompanied by a generous helping of fluffy coconut rice, crunchy anchovies and peanuts, as well as a simple boiled egg.
The Combination Curry Laksa didn’t disappoint either. The broth itself had a pleasant curry flavour, though could’ve definitely benefited from being creamier and richer. However, the noodles within were plentiful and cooked just right, perfectly soaking up the flavours from the soup. This was accompanied by traditional laksa toppings, such as a meaty chunk of eggplant that was heavenly soft, as well as tender slices of chicken, giant crunchy prawns, and spongy tofu. All exceptionally fresh and tasty, making for a rather delicious and hearty bowl of noodles.
The Mediocre
Nothing.
The Bad
Nothing.
The Verdict
As a newly launched eatery competing with the likes of Laksa King and Chef Lagenda, Passage Thru Malaysia undoubtedly had its work cut out! Fortunately, their food most certainly holds true to their Malaysian heritage, and ranks amongst some of the best Malaysian we’ve had, in Melbourne or in Malaysia.
We have no doubt Passage Thru Malaysia will soon rank amongst the most popular Malaysian in Melbourne.
