The Good
The special of the month, Pork Belly & Kimchi, was absolutely delicious. Featuring three amazing chunks of pork belly slow-cooked to perfection, the even layers of lean and fat made for such a succulent, juicy and flavoursome experience. The lovely porky sensation was well accompanied by the excitable spice of the kimchi-wrapped potato roll. Meanwhile, the lightly flavoured mushroom broth beautifully tied the dish together.
We also enjoyed the Miso Cured Salmon. Hidden underneath a healthy helpimg of herb salad, the salmon itself was just so tender and delicate. The protein easily fall apart with the push of a fork, it’s softness nicely contrasted by the crunchy goodness of the crispy mushroom risotto sitting underneath. Coupled with herbed mayo and dotted with nori powder, this very Japanese inspired dish certainly impressed.
The Cold Brew Coffee Spritzer also impressed. Utilising their home-made cold brew, the light fizz of the soda water combined with the tangy freshness of orange made for some amazing flavours. For a light, caffeinated drink on the summer, this was hard to beat.
The Mediocre
Nothing.
The Bad
Nothing.
The Verdict
It’s clear that Bean Smuggler is no ordinary cafe. With a creative and well-executed menu, this brand new eatery aims to offer a modern and refined approach to traditional breakfast for Melbourne’s growing West.
We were very much impressed with the quality of the food here, though just kept wishing there was just more of it on our plate.
