The Good
We started off with the Eggplant and Pea Dosa and were immediately impressed. The lightly flakey, and slightly spongy pastry enclosed a flavoursome inner filled with soft gooey eggplants that was lightly smoked as well as and delicious peas. The piping hot dosa was well spiced, served with a refreshing coconut chutney as well as a spicy sambal dal.
We then moved onto the amazing Banana Leaf Fish Fry. Wrapped within a banana leaf, the fish was cooked to perfection. Such delicate and tender protein and very well spiced with aromatic garnishes such as ginger, garlic, chillies and coconut, this fish was just so bold and flavoursome. This was served with two steamed, fermented rice cakes that were suitably spongy and topped with some coconut chutney to balance off the heat.
No Indian meal can be complete without some Biryani and Tikka Masala.
The Biryani was exceptional. Served in a cute clay pot, the rice was so light and fragrant. This was steamed with an excellent variety of spices creating an amazing aroma with each bite. Within, the generous chunks of lamb were tender and succulent, with a bold lamb flavour that didn’t disappoint.
The Tikka Masala certainly exceeded our expectations. The curry was so rich and flavoursome, and admittedly rather spicy for our palate. Fortunately, this was rounded out by a good amount of sweetness. The thick sauce was perfectly soaked up by the fluffy garlic naan, while the tandoori-cooked chicken was exceptionally tender and juicy.
The Mediocre
Nothing.
The Bad
Nothing.
The Verdict
Mukka in Fitzroy has definitely dished up one of the most impressive Indian we’ve had in Melbourne to date.
Despite its locale, the modern, impeccable presentation of each dish did not sacrifice on authenticity. The rarely-seen Southern Indian dishes were simply delectable and offered up some of the most appetising flavours and sensations, all cooked to perfection at your desired level of spice.
