The Good

We were off to a fantastic start with a trio of Tapas. The gorgeous Angry Eggs were just sensational. Topped with a sunny fried egg and plenty of crispy jamon, the mountain of soft, fluffy potatoes underneath were baked to a perfect golden brown. With a scrumptious, tomato-based sauce holding it altogether, this flavourful comfort food will keep you licking your lips long after.

We also loved the Jamon Croquettes. The thin and delicate, crisp outer held together a cheesy, meaty inner. The signature flavour of jamon was forward and bold, creating an exquisite, creamy sensation when combined with gooey cheese.

The mains certainly didn’t disappoint either. The Paella Negra was an impressive sight with its all-black squid ink rice. On top sat an abundance of incredibly fresh seafood including generously sized scallops, tender calamari and crunchy prawns. The rice itself was cooked just right, soft without being mushy, though a tad more seasoning could’ve brought out the seafood flavours even more.

Another standout was the Porchetta. Piled high, the crackle surrounding the pork belly was just incredible. Offering an exceptional crunch, the outer skin enclosed a meaty inner that was just so tender and flavourful. The bold porky sensation was well accompanied by the tang of the apple slaw, while the pillowy soft baked potatoes nicely juxtaposed the crunch of the crackling. All held together by the slight sweetness of apple jus, this was one immature Spanish dish that kept on giving.

The Mediocre

The Sigara Borek was undoubtedly the weakest part of our meal. The filo pastry wasn’t as crisp or flakey as we’d hoped. Within, the feta was dense and chewy. This was in contrast to the the light and fluffy ricotta we’ve been hoping for.

The Bad

Nothing.

The Verdict

It was overall a rather memorable meal. With such an amazing range of cocktails, wines and spirits paired with superb, authentic Spanish cuisine, Bouzy Rouge offers a taste of old school glamour and is the perfect place to dig into a long weekend lunch.
