The Good

We were off to an impressive start to our meal with the Beef Pie. Made from scratch in house by their pastry chef and owner, it’s no doubt the outer pastry was short and flakey. Effortlessly crumbling to an inner filled with a tender, meaty chunks of beef. The fragrant red wine sauce was accompanied by plenty of veggies, and the rich tomato base was well balanced in sweetness. Simply an excellent pie that was tasty and very filling.

We also enjoyed the French Toast. The three slices of thin, brioche exhibited a nice golden brown and lightly fried. On top sat plenty of fruits and berries, including dollops of tangy jam. This was all held together by a delightful sweet syrup and a generous helping of cream. While we would’ve preferred a thicker brioche and an eggier batter, this was nonetheless and enjoyable sweet dish.

The BBQ Pork Buns are a must-try. Meticulously made in house with a very Malaysian pastry on the outer, these were definitely not your ordinary pork buns. The two-layered outer crust was flakey yet soft, holding together an soft and gooey inner of barbecue pork that was sweet and savoury. The bold flavours, combined with the crisp, crusty outer, made for an irresistible treat.

The Mediocre

The Vegetarian Baked Omelette was nothing to write home about. The veggies within were plentiful, mixed with a mushrooms and baked in egg and cheese in a cast iron pan. This was served with slices of sourdough that was fresh and crunchy. However, the dish fell flat on flavour, and some spices or sauces would’ve really brought this dish to the next level.

The Bad

Nothing.

The Verdict

Situated in West Melbourne right next to the Queen Victoria Market, Common Ground Coffee is a no-frills bakery and cafe that should be known for their amazing baked goods. With very affordable pricing over the board, you’d be silly not to try their hearty pies or massive sausage rolls for yourself!
