The Good
The famed Strawberry Watermelon Cake ass of course a must try. The delicately layered cake features a generous slice of crisp, juicy watermelon, topped with a light almond dacquoise and a fragrant rose scented cream. On top sat slices of strawberries and crunchy crumbs of pistachio. A light, refreshing and very fruity treat that’s remarkably tasty.
Our favourite from the tasting was undoubtedly the Pistachio Lemon Zen Cake. The layers of pistachio ganache and white chocolate mousse made for a heavenly sensation that was sweet and nutty. With a beautiful tangy flavour thanks to the dollop of lemon curd that rounded off the sweetness,, this well balanced dessert delivered a flavourful and indulgent experience that’s hard to rival.
The Japanese Forrest Cake looked mighty spectacular. Complete with a chocolate leaf and cookie crumbs surrounding it, this was definitely a sight to behold. The light layers of Hojicha sponge carried a lovely tea flavour, which was well accompanied by umeshu (plum wine) infused cream that offered a light fruity sensation. Topped with matcha moss as garnish and dark chocolate crumbs, this very Japanese take on the traditional Black Forrest certainly impressed.
Aside from their gorgeous cakes, their croissants are a must try. The sizeable pastry features beautifully laminated layers, offering an incredibly flakey and crisp outer that made way for a buttery, pillowy inner that had a slight springy feel. This was undoubtedly one of the best, if not the best Croissant we’ve come across!
The Mediocre
Nothing.
The Bad
Nothing.
The Verdict
Popping up once again in Melbourne, Black Star Pastry is a welcome addition to our highly competitive food scene. Needless to say, the quality of the cakes and pastries were second to none.
The Asian-inspired menu offers a sweet indulgence that’s neither too overwhelming nor too rich. Just perfect we recon!
