The Good

It was a pleasant start with the Vegetarian Pan Fried Gyoza. Served in potsticker style, the dumplings were plump and juicy, with its bottom lightly crisp. The thin and delicate skin was a delight, holding a textured and flavourful inner made with fresh mixed veggies. The soy and sesame oil dipping sauce added nice depth in flavour.

We then dug into the Misoya Special Ramen. The miso base soup was absolutely irresistible. The rich, creamy flavour was bold and forward, with a fragrant sensation and just thick enough to coat each strand of noodle. Within, the noodles were cooked to just the right softness, and was accompanied beautifully tender and lightly charred slices of pork belly. Accompanied by perfect soft boiled egg and plenty of greens, this was an exceptionally tasty ramen that exceeded our expectations.

The Katsu Curry was equally enjoyable. The Japanese curry with minced pork and eggplant was very aromatic and flavoursome. The bold umami sensation made it exceptional when paired with warm jasmine rice. This was accompanied by a giant tonkatsu, which exhibited a crunchy though not flakey outer, that enclosed a meaty and juicy inner with pleasant porky flavour.

The Mediocre

Nothing.

The Bad

Nothing.

The Verdict

Located in the hipster Brunswick, we were pleasantly surprised by the authenticity and quality of Japanese dishes served up by Misoya.

The flavours and execution were spot on, just as you’d expect straight from the motherland itself. With generous portion sizes and exceptional taste, we think we’ve just found a hidden gem!
