The Good

The Mediocre
The El Rey Taco was passable though unremarkable. The chipotle cauliflower didn’t carry much of a spice, rather we just felt a tad of chilli at times. Disappointingly, there was more shredded cabbage than cauliflower itself. And the toppings overall left much to be desired.
We shared similar sentiments on the Carnitas Tacos. While the sautéed king oyster mushrooms were plump and juicy, we just couldn’t find much of it on the taco. This was oddly paired with roasted spring onion and coriander-lime creme, both of which didn’t quite compliment the seasoning and umami of the mushrooms. It was strange, salty though not unpleasant.
The Bad
The Schnitzel Taco was sorely disappointing. The deep fried mushroom schnitzel was extremely salty, and that’s coming from someone who enjoys salty food. However on this occasion, the saltiness overwhelmed all other flavours and we couldn’t even find relief in the avocado salsa nor lettuce. This was coupled with oil quite literally drizzling out of the taco as we picked it up. This was undoubtedly the worst taco we’ve ever come across.
Knowledge from the wait staff was also severely lacking, exhibited by being unable to explain what the tasting menu would comprise of.
The Verdict
Don’t be fooled by the name Don Taco. While one would expect this eatery would excel at dishing up tasty and authentic Tacos, you are instead unapologetically ripped off by a vegan joint masquerading as a Mexican eatery.
With sky high prices, tiny portions and tragically flawed execution, we departed hungry after 5 tacos each.
There was nothing authentic about the tacos here, nor was there anything healthy about the vegan food served here tonight.
