The Good
My customised Beef Mac N Cheese was a sight to behold. Sandwiched between the toasted brioche, unmodified, it was already pre-loaded with a beef patty, bacon, and a variety of cheeses. Opting to add on extras including mushrooms, potato rosti, pulled pork and chorizo, this burger was absolutely bursting with flavour.
The highlight though was undoubtedly the pulled pork. Incredibly juicy and succulent, the protein was tender and simply fell apart. Well complemented by a sweet barbecue sauce that wasn't overly powering, the beautiful pork aroma definitely shone through.
The mushrooms within also deserves a special mention. Chunky and sauteed to perfection, the mushroom flavour was bold had a buttery aftertaste. The freshness was undeniable and added great flavour to the burger.
With a crunchy outer and a mushy inner, the potato rosti was perfectly accompanied by the cheesy mac and cheese as well as the saltiness of the bacon. The beef though, was slightly overcooked on this occasion and as a result a tad chewier than we'd like. Despite this, the burger remained incredibly juicy and was one of the messiest feed I've ever had.
We also enjoyed the Cheesy Bacon & Onion Loaded Fries. Generously topping a bed of crunchy and golden chips, the cheese was plentiful, as were the bits of bacon. The stringy cheesy goodness, combined with the crunchiness of the chips and bacon, made for a very appetising side to the burgers. The freshness of the spring onions were definitely a welcome addition as well.
The Mediocre
We found the Onion Rings rather disappointing. On this occasion, the rings had a batter that was too thick and sweet. The thin onion within failed to shine, which resulted in a lacklustre experience.
The Bad
Nothing.
The Verdict
Being the new kid on the block, I am glad to report that Burger Kitchen dishes out some pretty solid burgers, and ranks amongst some of the best in Melbourne.
While it's not a rarity that you'd come across burger joints that have a menu allowing you to customise your ideal burger to your hearts' content, as well as a having plethora of choices to accomodate different dietary requirements, most don't usually execute well on their core ingredients. On this occasion, we were pleasantly surprised at how well all the components of our burger worked together at Burger Kitchen.
Would Penguin Eat Again?
Definitely. Burger Kitchen definitely gives more established burger joints a great run for their money, and with such a solid offering and abilities to customise, I will definitely bring others back for more!
Penguineats would like to thank Taking A Bite and Burger Kitchen for inviting us to sample their menu.
