The Good

The Veggie Sista was simply spectacular. Loaded with a generous portion of chilli scrambled eggs, they were, creamy, silky smooth, and bursting with flavour. Well seasoned with a variety of spices that exhibited a spicy kick with a dollop of pesto smeared on top, these were no ordinary scrambled eggs. This was well complemented by a spread of avocado and goats cheese mixture that provided an additional depth in flavour and a delectable creaminess. Accompanying it was the crunchy asparagus, juxtaposed by the juicy and soft roast mushroom. All served on top a soft, cheesy waffle that was crispy on the outer and spongey within, this all-vegetarian breakfast had it all, flavour and textures.

We also enjoyed the Shakshouka. Spectacularly served on a whole bread bowl, the Cobb roll was generous filled with this signature Israeli saucy eggs. Cooked with a rich and flavoursome tomato base, the sauce well spiced and loaded with various peppers and tomatoes. Complemented by an abundance of fresh whole spinach and the occasional specks of goats cheese, the diversity of flavours and textures were stunning and made for a very appetising breakfast, and ended with the house made bread perfectly soaked up all the delicious juices of this hearty meal.

The Mediocre

While the Waffle Doughnut Mega Milkshake looked mighty spectacular, but unfortunately the taste fell short of expectations. The waffle donut was fried too hard on this occasion and failed to have a contrasting soft inner. The vanilla milkshake, which apparently was made with a vanilla custard, had an odd aftertaste that was not to our palate. While the dark chocolate pouring sauce was enjoyable in and of itself, we can’t say we weren’t disappointed by the drink overall.

The Bad

Nothing.

The Verdict

The Left Handed Chef excels as a cute little neighbourhood cafe that executed flawlessly on traditional breakfast items. From the simple scrambled eggs, to the house made bread, owner and chef Ehud brings traditional staples to the next level with his unique twists and flawless execution. Coupled with more than generous portions, there’s no surprise this unassuming cafe was packed!

Would Penguin Eat Again?

Very much so. It’s a rarity to see such traditional breakfast items so well-executed, and with an Israeli twist thrown in here and there, we’d definitely be back for more.
Penguineats would like to thank owner Ehud for inviting us to The Left-Handed Chef.
