The Good

Using Rosso Roasting Co coffee at Heresy, the coffee is full bodied and aromatic. It is certainly one of the better quality coffees you can find in Melbourne CBD. The Hot Chocolate was also rather tasty and well-presented. Coming in a minimalistic ceramic mug, it has a good blend of creaminess and chocolate flavour.

The African Dukkah Sweet Potato & Teff Salad is healthy and has bold flavours from the sweet potato.

The Mediocre

The Berry Breakfast Jar is cleverly packaged in a reusable container and certainly looks appetising with the layers of fruit, chia seeds, banana, oats, almonds and banana. While we appreciate the healthiness of this item, it is rather bland as there is nothing to bring all the flavours together. We would prefer some sweetness; perhaps a dollop of honey.

The Unusual Suspects, a buckwheat salad, is beautifully presented. It is highlighted by a vividly green salad and bright white and yellow egg portion. While healthy, it is equally bland and would benefit from some kind of dressing.

The Bad

Nothing.

The Verdict

As a newly opened hipster coffee bar tucked away in one of Melbourne’s many laneways in the CBD, Heresy offers a small menu that boasts simple, healthy, and wholesome ingredients. Unfortunately though, the end result was universally and unexpectedly bland and lacked flare.

While every attempt was made to create food that was both healthy and palatable, Heresy only achieved one of the above, and may only appeal to the super health conscious or those wishing to make themselves feel better, or less guilty, after a long weekend of pigging out.

Would Penguin Eat Again?

The drinks are certainly worth coming back for and were the highlight of our visit. Also kudos to Heresy for their focus on sustainable and reusable packaging!

Penguineats would like to thank Taking A Bite and Heresy for the invitation.
