Food

  • Egg Tart
  • Wu Gock (Taro Dumpling)

The Good

Served warm, the custard within the Egg Tart was silky smooth and rather creamy. With a pleasant egg flavour throughout, the custard was nicely sweetened and rather delicate, easily melting away with each bite. The pastry surrounding the outer was also aptly flakey, though definitely could’ve done with a minute or two more in the oven to give it a darker colour.

We also enjoyed the Wu Gock, which was incredibly fresh on this occasion. As a result, the outermost layer of pastry was incredibly crisp and flakey, easily giving way to an inner of flavoursome and still-hot mashed taro. Without being overly oily, this aromatic taro dumpling is definitely one of the better ones we’ve sampled in Melbourne.

The Mediocre

Nothing.

The Bad

Nothing.

The Verdict

Grain Asian is always our default go-to for some authentic Hong Kong delicacies and snacks, and they certainly didn’t disappoint this time. It’s hard to find such fresh and delicious egg tarts outside of Hong Kong.

Would Penguin Eat Again?

Sure. Just make sure to get a fresh batch as it’s just that much better!
