The Good
Set in a beautifully eclectic retro setting, Jerry’s Milk Bar really feels like a blast from the past. Thankfully, Jerry’s isn’t all show as the food really backs up its heritage. Starting with wonderfully full-bodied lattes, we were served a selection of Jerry’s most popular dishes.
We began with the Bircher Muesli, the soaked rolled oats were combined with fresh berries, yogurt and the crunch of shaved apple.
The Brekky Roll was a beautifully made breakfast classic with every element within it perfectly cooked. Fried eggs, with grilled tasty cheese and bacon were tied together with tomato relish and all wrapped up in Turkish pide bread, which had the perfect balance of softness and crust.
But the highlight of our meal were the Corn Fritters, which were super fresh, sweet and flavourful, served with avocado, flash fried kale and a perfectly poached egg. The deep-fried nuggets of gold just kept us wanting more.
The Mediocre
Despite having no affect on the taste, latte art is more of an expectation than a luxury at most Melbourne establishments these days. The presentation of all dishes also seem to be stuck within the last decade.
The Bad
Nothing.
The Verdict
Jerry’s Milk Bar is a St Kilda institution and in an environment of overly fashionable contemporary cafes, Jerry’s stands on its own, and so does the food.
Would Penguin Eat Again?
Definitely! We need a much larger serving of the corn fritters please and thank you.
Penguineats would like to thank owner Andrew and the team at Jerry’s Milk Bar for their hospitality.
