The Good
The Southern Fried Chicken was of course a must-try and we weren’t at all disappointed to say the least. The highlight of this stunningly presented dish was of course the three generously sized pieces of buttermilk fried chicken itself, which had a beautifully crumbed, golden brown outer that offered up a satisfying though not overly brittle crunch. Chomping down within reveals a well-spiced, flavoursome and incredibly tender inner cuts of chicken thigh, which was simply delightful thanks to its meaty and juicy goodness. This was well complemented by a tangy tomato salsa, as well as pickled celery and jalapenos that was just sour enough to cut through the heavier components of the dish. Unfortunately, the waffles themselves weren’t overly impressive on this occasion, which leaned towards the drier side and despite it’s crisp crunch, and definitely needed more airy fluffiness.
Lorna’s Turmeric Scrambled Eggs was another highlight of our meal. The scrambled eggs themselves were silky smooth and indulgently creamy, with a slight pillowy, fluffy texture to it. Within, we found the liberal use of banana peppers offering an exceptional taste and a slight spice, while the chunks of chorizo, slices of potatoes contributed additional depth in flavour as well as texture. All served on a toasted, buttery sourdough, this was one egg dish that certainly delivered in flavour.
We concluded our meal on a sweeter note with the Homemade Crumpets. At an impressive thickness, the three crumpets laid on a plate alongside plenty of lemon curd, coconut custard and a lovely cashew crumble. The crumpets were heavenly soft, with a spongy feedback and just the right amount of sweetness that was well juxtaposed by the tartness of the creamy lemon curd. Contrasting this was of course the beautiful cashew crumble, adding a nutty, textural crunch to this well-balanced and tasty dessert dish.
The Mediocre
Nothing.
The Bad
Nothing.
