The Good
The food offerings from the Boot Factory initially seem to be pretty standard brunch fare but on closer inspection, adds little touches that elevates the overall brunch experience. The first example of which is the brunch staple, Eggs Benedict. The Boot Factory’s rendition furthers the traditional formula, using smoked ham hock and a punchy mustard and apple cider hollandaise sauce to blanket the perfectly poached egg. However the greatest deviation takes the form or a cauliflower and onion hash which replaces the usual bread and has both a crisp outer crust and a creamy interior, all balanced by the rich sweetness from the caramelised onions.
The Wild Mushroom dish also plays into this philosophy of elevating classics and while the perfectly sauteed mushrooms are themselves savoury flavour bombs, the truffle butter adds a very well-matched nuance, while a generous slice of buttery toasted brioche mops up the oozy goodness from the optional poached egg.
Going out on a limb with the lunch menu, the beautifully presented Grilled Barramundi was a bit of a culinary shock to ‘brunch’ but was very welcome. The very generous portion of fish was juicy and really well-cooked, whose flavours were very much enhanced by a miso chilli glaze that really packed a punch. The vegetables and the fried shallots played a really good role in complementing the fish, both providing from freshness and a textural twist.
The Mediocre
The two coffees we had were well-poured and presented well, but seemed to be on the weaker, slightly milkier side of the spectrum, but pleasant in their own right.
The Bad
Nothing.
The Verdict
The Boot Factory is a really cute and comfortable restaurant that has created its identity with its reclaimed space. Along with this, it has reclaimed some tired stereotypes of Melbournian food by adjusting and enlivening it to produce dishes that are new, but also familiar and most importantly, delicious. The service is excellent and the venue homely.
