The Good
The Mango Smoothie was rather enjoyable. The drink was beautifully presented in a tall glass, dusted with coconut shavings and drizzled with a sticky lime syrup. Within, the smoothie was thick and creamy, with a beautiful mango flavour without being overpowered by sweetness.
The Mediocre
The Tim Tam Cornut was rather unremarkable. The chunks of Tim Tams on top were probably the highlight, as the cronut itself was neither very fresh nor tasty. Lacking in both flakiness on the outer and sponginess within, the only good thing it had going for it was the sugar dusting coating the outside. The huge dollop of bland, flavourless cream also didn’t quite help the cause either.
The Bad
The Latte was simply a poor excuse for a coffee. The shot of espresso within was exceedingly bitter and clearly tasted burnt. This was coupled with milk that wasn’t quite properly frothed.
The Verdict
Our visit was remarkably unimpressive. While the venue itself is nicely decked out and is a pleasant atmosphere to laze around, the food and drinks definitely leave much to be desired. As a cafe though, the coffee fell miserably short on expectations.
Would Penguin Eat Again?
With Melbourne’s coffee game this competitive, we can’t recommending, nor foresee being be back for a long, long while.
