The Good
We were off to an impress start thanks to the Signature Chinese Burger. With a generous helping of well-spiced, succulent and juicy pulled pork belly sandwiched between the pan-baked Yunnan pocket, we found the flavours exceptionally appetising. Mixed together were plenty of diced capsicum and herbs combined with a sweet and savoury sauce, offering an excellent variety of textures and aromas. Delicious.
We also enjoyed the Breakfast Noodles. The cute warm bowl was beautifully decorated with beef brisket, tea egg and bok choy. Underneath, the flat rice noodles were cooked just right, so silky smooth and just the right softness. The light broth was well accompanied by the garnish of chilli that provided a bold spice, while the flavoursome beef brisket offered up a hearty, savoury sensation. The only shortfall of the dish would be the beef itself, which as a tad tougher than expected.
The Lemongrass Chicken Grain Salad certainly didn’t disappoint either. Mixed with buckwheat and quinoa and tossed with plenty of mint, coriander and basil, this salad was certainly not light on flavour! The textured experience was made even tastier thanks to the tender slices of juicy pulled chicken, and with a refreshing and lightly sweetened pomegranate and honey lime dressing, this was one unrelenting, delicious salad!

The Verdict
As a rather underrepresented cuisine within the diverse food scene in Melbourne, Naxi Folk artfully combines the traditional flavours of Yunnan with the modern creativity of the Melbourne brunch scene.
The initial results are rather impressive, and for the first time in a long time, we found our brunch both interesting and pleasing to the palate. While there’s still much room for refinement, Naxi Folk is off to an amazing start introducing Melbournians to Yunnan Cuisine.
Would Penguin Eat Again?
For sure! Given the small serves, we will definitely order more dishes to share next time round.
