The Good

The Mushrooms most definitely redefined our concept of a mushroom dish. Pouring the piping hot jar of smoked mushroom broth sitting front and centre of the dish onto the components surrounding it ensured an extraordinary experience. The flavours of the sautéed mushrooms were instantly elevated thanks to the rich and flavoursome, lightly smoked broth. Meanwhile, the silky smooth and delicate tofu was well accompanied by specks of chilli throughout. A simple yet exceptionally well executed mushroom dish that redefined our

A definite highlight of our meal was the Skirt Steak. With a charred outer offering up a slight smoky, charcoal aroma, the tender and juicy steak was cooked to perfection. The protein was top notch, full of flavour and with just enough chewy texture to get the juices flowing. Underneath sat a thick slice of toasted beer bread that’s been soaked in stout, creating a pillowy yet crisp experience with a hint of malt. Accompanied by the beautiful sweet peppers and the perfectly runny soft boiled eggs, this was certainly a dish to remember.

We rounded off our meal with the Grapefruit Cheesecake. The cheesecake itself turned our expectations upside down with its soft and fluffy texture and a hint of grapefruit sweetness throughout. This was topped with a suitably jiggly and exceptionally silky tonka bean panna cotta and juxtaposed by the crisp, flash fried rocket leaves, all beautifully accompanied the spongy textures of the cheesecake itself.

The Mediocre

Nothing.

The Bad

Nothing.

The Verdict

Spearheading the concept of “Dinner for Breakfast”, Hiatus is a brand new and elegantly decked-out cafe that’s offers up an brunch fare that’s anything but ordinary.

You won’t find the usual suspects here like the eggs benny or smashed avo. But for an extraordinary breakfast experience that’s bound to tantalise your tastebuds, challenge your palate and question what’s all the jazz happening with each spoonful, this is just the place to be.

Would Penguin Eat Again?

This was undoubtedly the most unique breakfast experience we’ve come across to date, and we just can’t wait to be back to try more weird and wonderful combinations!

Penguineats would like to thank owner Simon from Hiatus for inviting us.
