The Good
We thoroughly enjoyed the Baked Eggs Shakshuka. Served piping hot, the baked eggs were served within a rich tomato base loaded with diced eggplant, capsicum and tomato ragu. Torpe definitely turned up the heat on this dish, offering a rather spicy sensation that’s coupled with fragrant dukkah spices scattered liberally throughout. With a generous dollop of smoked scamorza offering an amazing creamy experience coupled with two still-runny eggs, this appetising dish was best served on slices of toast. Scrumptious.
We also enjoyed the Cauliflower Kimchi Stirfry. The signature spice from the kimchi was forward and bold without overpowering other components, making for some very appetising flavours. This was mixed with a variety of veggies including soft and gooey miso eggplant, crisp bean sprouts, fluffy quinoa and cuts of bok choy. Simply outstanding Asian flavours!
Dessert did not disappoint either. Made fresh in house, the Matcha Waffle was simple yet delicious. The waffle itself had a nice crisp outer and a soft, almost spongy inner. Dusted with plenty of matcha powder, the scoop of hot pink hibiscus ice cream brilliantly juxtaposed the green matcha. Dipping the waffle into bits of pink coconut yoghurt offered a pleasant sweet creaminess, while cuts of fresh berries balanced out with a slight hint of tartness.

The Verdict
Solid coffee, beautiful food, amazing flavours; these are all the great things you can expect at this newly opened neighbourhood gem.
Despite its a rather humble name and premise of being “clumsy”, Torpe is destined to become so much more than just another local cafe.
