The Good

We enjoyed the Shakshuka. The nicely presented Turkish baked eggs were so full of flavour. Loaded with a lovely variety of beans baked to just the right softness, they were accompanied by a generous helping of lamb sausages and chorizo. The chorizo wasn’t quite as spicy as we’d hoped, though the lamb sausages were juicy and flavourful. Paired with toasted Turkish bread, this was a hearty and scrumptious dish indeed.

The Mediocre

The Almond Croissant didn’t quite hit the spot. Possibly catered, the crunchy, flakey qualities of a freshly baked croissant was sorely missing, and overall just felt rather damp and limp.

The Bad

Unfortunately the Prawn Linguini failed to impress. The king prawn sitting on top of the pasta was halved and deep fried, making it rather hard to eat. The linguini itself was far too hard and chewy, most definitely undercooked on this occasion. As a whole, the dish was lacking in any flavour apart from chilli, which was overwhelming and distracted away from the flavour of the prawns and zucchini themselves.

The Verdict

We can’t say we weren’t disappointed by this meal. The mediocre baked goods and lazy execution of the Prawn Linguini definitely put us off.

The saving grace? Above-average coffee and a hearty, though unspectacular Shakshuka.

Would Penguin Eat Again?

With so many cafes dotted around Melbourne, it’s hard to warrant a return.
