The Good
We were off to a brilliant start to our Japanese feast with the Sushi and Sashimi Set. The stunning presentation made way for an absolutely fresh and decadent tasting. The salmon was no doubt our favourite, with a firm yet tender texture and no hint of fishiness. The seared snapper was also delicious, with a light smokey flavour that beautifully accompanied the lightly flavoured fish.
The Tonkotsu Ramen with Pork Belly Chashu also impressed in more ways than one. The rich, pork broth was thick, creamy and full of flavour. This was soaked up nicely by the plentiful, thick curly ramen noodles. On top sat a generous helping of grilled pork belly chasu, nicely balanced in lean and fat that made every mouthful so flavourful and juicy. Alongside the perfect half boiled egg, this was one tasty bowl of noodles and the perfect comfort food.
We also enjoyed the Sous Vide Angus Beef Don. The sous vide beef was delicately prepared, sous vide for 12hrs in 50 degrees ensured the Angus beef was not the slightrst overcooked. The beef was plentiful and nicely charred on the outer, glazed with the signature Japanese wafu sauce that was both sweet and savoury, offering a balanced and good depth in flavour. This was combined with plenty of edamame as well a perfect 63degree egg.
We also enjoyed the Crispy Chicken Maryland in Hokkaido Curry Soup Broth. The gigantic cut of maryland was definitely a sight to behold, with it’s gorgeous golden skin glistening. The bold, aromatic and rich curry soup was full of flavour and had the perfect balance of spice, chilli and savoury. With plentiful of charred veggies within adding hints of sweetness, this was one tasty combination.
The Mediocre
Nothing.
The Bad
Nothing.
The Verdict
With a sushi chef from Komeyui, Waku Waku newly opened in Southbank with a diverse Japanese inspired menu that’s bound to satisfy.
Whilst not strictly authentic Japanese, we found all our dishes simply tasty and satisfying. Most notably, the Sushi and Sashimi Set were a definite standout in quality and freshness, while the rich, creamy Ramen broth was absolutely irresistible.
