The Good

The Original Fried Drumstick was undoubtedly the highlight of our meal, offering generously meaty pieces of chicken enveloped in a beautifully crisp batter. The coating provided a satisfying crunch without being overly brittle, while the chicken underneath remained wonderfully juicy, even after several rounds. Of the seasonings available, the original was easily our favourite, offering a clean, well-balanced flavour that allowed the chicken itself to shine. A thoroughly satisfying fried chicken that certainly didn’t disappoint.

The Spicy Cayenne Wings were equally impressive, delivering a generous hit of cayenne heat that gradually intensified with each bite. Unlike many spicy offerings where the heat quickly fades, the seasoning here provided a lingering kick that made these particularly enjoyable. The batter also retained its delightful crunch despite the coating, making for a wonderfully satisfying combination of spice and texture.

The Tater Tots were another pleasant surprise, arriving freshly prepared and uniformly golden despite the busy all-you-can-eat setting. Each piece offered a satisfying crunch without being overly greasy, making these an exceptionally enjoyable accompaniment to the fried chicken. Simple, but executed remarkably well.

The Mediocre

The Waffles were pleasant enough, offering a satisfying exterior crunch that provided a welcome change between successive rounds of chicken. The accompanying syrup certainly helped elevate the experience, introducing some much-needed flavour to an otherwise rather ordinary waffle. Nothing particularly memorable, though perfectly serviceable as a palate cleanser.

The Bad

Unfortunately, the Cheese Toastie left much to be desired. While the grilled bread looked appealing enough with its sprinkling of sea salt, the cheese filling itself was disappointingly bland, lacking any meaningful seasoning or depth of flavour. The overall combination was rather uninspiring, particularly when there was so much delicious fried chicken available instead. We’d certainly be saving the stomach space for another drumstick.

The Verdict

At just $30 for 90 minutes of bottomless fried chicken, Flappy Joe’s offers exceptional value in the heart of Melbourne CBD. More importantly, the chicken itself is genuinely delicious, with wonderfully juicy drumsticks and delightfully spicy wings proving to be the standouts, while the freshly prepared tots were another welcome surprise. Service was equally commendable, with prompt replenishments throughout the meal ensuring we were never left chasing another serving. While the waffles were relatively forgettable and the toastie best avoided, there’s certainly plenty to enjoy here. For anyone looking to indulge in a generous fried chicken feast with a group of friends, Flappy Joe’s is well worth a visit. Just make sure to arrive hungry.
