The Good
The portion of Large Chips is genuinely absurd — more chips than you’d expect from most sit-down restaurants, let alone a wharf takeaway. The batter is light and doesn’t add much bulk, which is exactly right. The outside crunches properly, while the inside is soft and fluffy all the way through. For a regional fish and chip shop, these are well above average — possibly the best single argument for making the drive from Melbourne.
The Mediocre
The Fried Gummy Shark arrived freshly fried and hot, crisp enough and not greasy, which is the baseline for a shop with its own fishing fleet. That said, the positives stop there. The piece was noticeably small and thin — not the chunky slab of shark you’d reasonably expect from a business that pulls its own catch. You eat it in a few bites and it’s done. There was nothing distinctly flavoured about it, and nothing that sets it apart from a suburban fish and chip shop three suburbs from your house.
The Bad
Nothing.
The Verdict
Port Albert Fish & Chip Co is a chips-first venue that happens to sell fish. The chips are genuinely stellar and worth detouring for on a Gippsland run, but an undersized gummy shark from a shop with its own fleet is a glaring missed opportunity. Come for the wharf setting, fill up on the chips, and keep your fish expectations modest.
Would Penguin Eat Again?
Maybe.
