The Good

The pancakes were perhaps the best I’ve ever tasted. They were thick yet fluffy, and had a good spongy springiness to it.

In fact, it felt a little bit like eating a cake as opposed to airy pancakes. The flavour profile was spot on with just the right amount of milk and butter. This was complemented well by the deliciously crunchy, chocolatey cookie crumbs and the smooth airy cream. I could eat just the pancakes, cookie crumbs and cream all day long. This combination was absolutely phenomenal in both flavour and texture and was the highlight of the whole meal. The berries were extraordinary fresh and tasted just so. However i felt as if the honeycomb’s own sweetness distracted away the deliciousness of everything else.

The burger was also freshly made with great ingredients. The pulled pork was juicy, tender and flavoured just right. Combined with the creamy mayo, the flavour profile was once again perfect. The bun was a brioche variety, lightly toasted and also light on butter flavour. This turned out to be a good thing as it did not overpower the succulent pulled pork itself. The salad within was fresh, but nothing too special.

The sauce for the chips deserve a special mention. While initially tasting like a sweeter and lighter barbeque sauce, further tasting reveals that there are slight curry undertones and a hint of smokey aftertaste. This was an extremely interesting combination of flavours that worked surprisingly well and was just the perfect dipping sauce for the chips.

The Mediocre

The choc brownie would’ve been really good, apart from the fact it’s gluten free. What that translated to was the lack of flour, resulting in a dense, hard and rather dry brownie laced with otherwise pretty perfect chocolate. Such a shame about the flour though.

The flat white was on the weak side. However what little flavour it had was definitely interesting and carried with it a pleasant aftertaste.

The Bad

Nothing.

The Verdict

Overall a great cafe for brunch that dishes out pretty spot on meals. The pancakes were divine and ranks among some of the best I’ve ever had while the flavour balance in the burger was absolutely flawless.

Would Penguin Eat Again?

Of course! Will be back for more pancakes no doubt. I may have just found my favourite brunch place!
