The Good
We thoroughly enjoyed the Ham and Cheese Croissant. Served warm, the croissant was delectably buttery and flakey. Sandwiched within was a melted slice of flavoursome cheese which was well complemented by a tender slice of ham. The perfect combination of cheesy and buttery goodness.
The Croque Monsieur is but a signature French staple and it surely didn’t disappoint either. Grilled to perfection, it was an absolutely perfect mix of cheese, ham and toast. The cherry on top was of course that truffle oil, which provided an additional depth in flavour. From the slight crispness of the outer from the charring, to the flavoursome cheese and the soft fluffy bread, this ranks amongst one of the best Croque Monsieurs I’ve had, France or otherwise.
We also enjoyed the Cheese Puffs, which were light and airy with a hint of cheesiness. These soft puffs were perfectly contrasted by the crunch of the mini toasts, topped with fresh and tender smoked salmon as well as a generous dollop of cream cheese. These were absolute bite-sized perfection.
Onto the sweets platter, a variety of Lemon Meringue and Fruit Tartlets were beautifully presented and surrounded tall cylinders of Chocolate Mousse. Our favourite was the Fruit Tartlet, which was beautifully topped with a variety of fruits including kiwi, strawberry, raspberry and blueberry. The freshness of the fruits were undeniably delicious, and juxtaposing the crunch of the tart was an inner generously filled with a lightly flavoured custard. Delectable.
We ended the afternoon with an assortment of Macarons and Chocolate Ganache Tartlets. The Macarons were absolutely beautiful, the delicate outer shell sandwiched a still-soft and gooey inner. With each bite, the shell simply crumbled apart in your mouth and melted away with the flavoursome filling. The Chocolate Ganache within the tarts was smooth and rich, slightly dark with a hint of bitterness.
The Mediocre
Unfortunately the Chocolate Mousse was not to our taste. Despite being exceptionally light and airy, the mousse itself remained beautifully smooth and creamy. However we felt that the citrus flavour from the orange peel didn’t quite complement the mousse, and distracted away from the chocolate flavours.
The Bad
Nothing.
The Verdict
As a newly established, more casual offshoot of the well-known Chez Olivier, Chez Mademoiselle offers a simple yet well-executed menu that provides an authentic taste of French baked goods, momentarily transporting you to a Parisian cafe.
The beautiful French-inspired decor, coupled with the tasty offerings and impeccable service, will ensure an extravagant Parisian high tea offering like no other.
Would Penguin Eat Again?
Absolutely. Those Croque Monsieurs here were to die for, as were those Ham and Cheese Croissants and I’d happily be back for more.
Penguineats would like to thank Chez Mademoiselle for their generous hospitality and Artmix for inviting us to the launch of Chez Olivier’s new venture – Chez Mademoiselle.
