The Good

We were off to a tasty start with the Zucchini Chips and the Chargrilled Octopus. The simple yet scrumptious octopus were cooked just right. The beautiful charring on the outer created an appetising crispness, while the slices of octopus were just so tender and juicy. Lightly dressed with a squeeze of lemon, simplicity hardly gets better than this.

The Zucchini Chips didn’t disappoint either. The thinly sliced zucchini were covered in a thin, fluffy layer of batter fried to golden brown. Offering good crispness that sealed in a juicy goodness within, these chips were definitely best paired with the tzatziki served alongside.

The Moussaka was no doubt a must try at any Greek establishment and Eleni’s recipe certainly did not disappoint. The almost crisp, cheesy outer layer hides away an inner filled with heavily seasoned beef mince, soft, gooey eggplant and slices of creamy potatoes. The flavours were bold and forward, simply sensational and was finished off with a thick, rich layer of bechamel. An utterly scrumptious comfort food for sure!

The Ouzo Seafood Saganaki was the signature dish at Eleni’s and it most definitely impressed. Loaded with fresh seafood including king prawns, mussels and scallops, the ouzo-tomato bisque was just so rich and divine. The creamy yet lovely seafood sensation throughout thanks to the beautiful sauce was perfectly soaked up by a cute hill of fluffy rice. This is bound to please any seafood lover.

We rounded off our meal with the Baklava Ice Cream. The home made ice cream was thick and creamy. Within, the crushed elements of a baklavas were abundant and offered up a nutty, crumbly texture. Lightly drizzled with honey and dusted with more baklava flakes, this was undoubtedly the best way to round off this delicious Greek feast.

The Mediocre

Unfortunately the Grilled Scallops didn’t quite impress. Despite it’s stunning appearance, the scallops we found within the shells were rather small and don’t actually belong to these large cells. The rich sauce was spicy and very appetising, though most definitely masked the goodness of the scallop itself.

The Bad

Nothing.

The Verdict

Dating back 40 years, Eleni’s is a Yarraville institution dishing up authentic, homely Greek food since the 70s.

Still utilising grandma Eleni’s recipes to this day, we thoroughly enjoyed experiencing the simplicity of authentic Greek cooking.
