The Good

It was a delicious start with Katz’s Tribute. The generously toasted bread offered a most satisfying crunch and, importantly, held together throughout the sandwich. Within, the pastrami, tomato sauce and flavoursome melted cheese worked remarkably well, with the pickled pepper contributing a lovely acidic contrast to the richer elements. The accompanying pickle and chips made for a satisfying and good-value feed. Our only complaint was that the pastrami itself could have been more generously portioned.

The Mediocre

Jimmy’s Meatball Sub certainly showed promise. Its enormous meatballs were wonderfully juicy and suitably substantial, complemented by a well-seasoned cheese topping. Unfortunately, the tomato sauce lacked the depth and acidity needed to stand alongside such rich ingredients. The result was tasty enough, though just short of the well-rounded flavour we had hoped for.

The Bad

Nothing.

The Verdict

Jimmy’s Deli was a welcome discovery in Yarraville, offering generously prepared sandwiches with real care given to texture and balance. Katz’s Tribute was the clear winner, despite its slightly modest serving of pastrami. The meatball sub would benefit from a bolder sauce. For a hearty daytime sandwich, this is certainly a worthwhile stop.
