The Good
The Katz’s Tribute is the one to order. The bread is properly toasted — genuine crunch that holds up through the whole sandwich, not just the first bite — and the combination of pastrami, tomato sauce and shredded cheese is more cohesive than it might sound. The pickled pepper on top does exactly what it should: a sharp, acidic cut through the richness. The cheese has real flavour rather than just playing a visual role, and it all arrives with chips and a proper pickle. Good value for what lands on the table. One honest note: the pastrami is on the light side for a sandwich built around a deli’s hero protein. What’s there is good; you just want more of it.
The Mediocre
The Jimmy’s Meatball Sub is almost great. The meatballs themselves are genuinely impressive — enormous, dense, and juicy right through — and the cheese topping is well-seasoned. The problem is the tomato sauce, which is too mild to carry its weight. It reads more as a vehicle for the meatball than a flavour in its own right. More acidity and depth would tie the whole thing together and match the ambition of everything else on the plate.

Jimmy’s Deli is the kind of place that keeps a suburb honest — a small, daytime-only deli running a short menu with real conviction. The Katz’s Tribute earns its reputation: the balance of textures is right, the price is fair, and the pickle situation alone puts it ahead of most sandwich shops in the west. The meatball sub has the bones of something great but needs a better sauce to get there. Go hungry, go early, and don’t overthink it.
