The Good

The Hot Meat Donut was a delightful surprise. Its lightly crisp, sweet exterior enclosed a fluffy inner and a spicy, richly flavoured meat filling. The sweet-and-savoury contrast worked beautifully. Absolutely delicious.

We also thoroughly enjoyed the Buffalo Fried Chicken Burger. Beneath its exceptionally crunchy batter was beautifully succulent, tender chicken, while the nori and Japanese mayo slaw added a rather inventive twist. A fantastic combination of textures and flavours.

The Smoked Beef Brisket was cooked remarkably well, remaining tender enough to pull apart while still retaining its structure. Rich, creamy mash made a lovely accompaniment. The lightly pickled, crunchy slaw helped offset the richness, though its serving could certainly have been more generous.

The Sweet n Sour Cauliflower was another welcome discovery. Lightly crisp florets were coated in a tangy soy-and-lemon sauce, with miso mayo introducing an appealing savoury depth. A surprisingly flavoursome offering.

The Verdict

Dexter impressed us with its imaginative approach to familiar American-style comfort food, without sacrificing good cooking. From the sweet-and-savoury meat donut to the excellent brisket and fried chicken, there were several genuine highlights. Only the modest serving of slaw disappointed. For anyone wanting something beyond the usual barbecue offering, this is most definitely worth a visit.
