The Good
The Chicken Parmigiana was a cracker of a pub parma. The crumbing was crisp and light, the chicken tender and juicy and nowhere near overcooked, and the tomato sauce was the real thing rather than anything out of a tin. There was a good amount of melted cheese on top, and the Side Salad was fresh, with a tangy mustard dressing.
The Garlic Bread had a sourdough-like inside with a proper crumb structure, while the outer was crisp, just like it had come fresh out of the oven. The garlic butter was generous, though some cheese would really have elevated it. A cute shape, and good bread overall, but expensive for what it is.
The Mediocre
The Fries were the letdown on an otherwise strong plate. They were a little limp, the serve was on the stingy side for a parma, and the seasoning tasted like a generic shaker blend with no real thought behind it. Edible, but forgettable.
The Bad
Nothing.
The Verdict
A solid country pub feed, with the parma firmly the star of the show. The crumb was crisp and light, the chicken was juicy, and we were pleased to find a sauce that didn’t come from a tin. The garlic bread was good but steep for what you get, and the fries let the side down. Worth a stop for the parma.
Would Penguin Eat Again?
