The Good
The Signature Shanghai Pan Fried Mini Bun Pork was undoubtedly the star of our lunch. We found the buns delightfully soft and fluffy, with their golden fried bases providing a wonderful crispness that contrasted beautifully with the lighter dough. Enclosed within was a generous helping of exceptionally juicy, slightly springy pork filling. These were absolutely delicious and very difficult to fault.
The Mediocre
The Shanghai Fried Thick Noodles were less impressive. Although the flavour remained pleasantly familiar and authentic, the noodles were noticeably oily and arrived with relatively little meat or black fungus mixed through. This left the dish rather unbalanced, with far too much noodle in proportion to its accompaniments.
The Bad
Nothing.
The Verdict
Shanghai Street remains a dependable option for a quick lunch in the Melbourne CBD, particularly when its excellent pan-fried pork buns are involved. Their wonderfully light texture and juicy filling more than justified our visit. The stir-fried noodles were acceptable but could do with a more generous spread of ingredients and less oil. We’d gladly return for another serving of buns.
