Food
- Pan-Fried Xiao Long Bao
- Special Yangzhou Fried Rice (with ham and egg)
The Good
We were intrigued by the Pan-Fried Xiao Long Bao, an unusual variation on the familiar soupy dumpling. The crisp fried base offered a welcome contrast to the juicy, flavourful filling, while the generous amount of soup within made for a satisfying bite. It was a genuinely enjoyable twist on a classic and easily the better dish sampled.
The Mediocre
Nothing.
The Bad
The Special Yangzhou Fried Rice was, unfortunately, a tremendous letdown. The dish lacked any discernible wok hei, while the cheap-tasting ham and ordinary assortment of peas and corn contributed remarkably little flavour. Instead of a fragrant, properly fried rice, we were presented with a decidedly uninspired preparation. Not one we would recommend.
The Verdict
North East China Family showed flashes of creativity with its enjoyable pan-fried soup dumplings, but the fried rice revealed a very different standard of cooking. The absence of wok character and the uninspiring ingredients were difficult to excuse in such a familiar dish. Anyone visiting would do well to concentrate on the dumplings. For us, the overall experience was not convincing enough to warrant a return.
